What are Cataracts?

A cataract is when the natural lens inside the eye becomes discolored and clouded, resulting in hazy or blurred vision at all distances. Cataracts may also result in double vision, trouble seeing well at night or in dim light, or seeing bright colors as faded or yellowish.

Who Gets Cataracts

Aging is the most common risk factor for cataracts. By age 75, approximately 50% of Americans have cataracts. Other risk factors for cataracts include:

Diabetes

History of ocular inflammation or uveitis

History of chronic steroid use

A health history that includes eye injury, eye surgery, or radiation on your upper body

Lots of time in the sun, especially without sunglasses to protect your eyes from ultraviolet rays

More than three million cataract procedures are performed each year, making it the most common surgery performed in the United States.

What You Need to Know About Cataract Surgery

It is important to come into our office for a complete cataract evaluation to determine the severity of the cataract and to determine if surgery is necessary. Our surgical counselors will explain the process of cataract removal and the insertion of a lens implant. This is where you have a distinct opportunity to decide how well you will see after surgery. If you select the advanced technology lens option, there is a possibility you can see without dependence on glasses at near, far and intermediate distances.
